This cost includes all your meals and all your programme participation. Please note that bedrooms and bathrooms at The Burn are shared. The total amount of £375 is payable at The Burn. You will pay The Burn staff directly while on the trip before departure.

The cost of your train travel is generously subsidised - the Dean’s Office will give you a grant of up to £70 to help with travel costs. The grant of up to £70 is reclaimed by a reimbursement form after you have stayed at The Burn.

Please note that The Burn is very remote – the local village is called Edzell and has no train station- and so after arriving at Montrose train station you still have some distance to travel. Those travelling on the trains advised below will be able to take (at no extra charge) a specially arranged luxury coach from Montrose. If you choose to take a different train then you will need to organise your own transport to and from the station, at your own additional expense (a taxi trip would cost £30-40 each way).

Instead of taking the train, you may of course wish to fly (the closest airport is Aberdeen, by taxi around 40 miles away), rent a car with others, or even to take a series of buses and coaches- there are many ways to reach The Burn to suit all budgets! If you are travelling in some other way you will be able to claim the same £70 College Travel Subsidy after your trip. Please be aware that the official programme begins at The Burn at 5pm on Tuesday 25 August 2026 so you must have arrived at The Burn by that time.

The total cost of the Dean’s trip for Members will then be-

(a) £375 for 3 nights’ accommodation/food/programme at The Burn payable to The Burn staff directly.

(b) Your travel costs to and from The Burn - for which you will receive usually a £70 grant from the College upon your return from Scotland with a Burn receipt

This amazing experience is now recruiting. If you want to come, please contact Charley.Light@goodenough.ac.uk immediately.

There is no application form to fill in - you just need to send Charley an email saying you want to come. You can only apply for yourself; all other College Members must apply for themselves.

Once Charley has contacted you in response to your email asking you to book your train travel, you should do so immediately - note that the sooner you book your train ticket, the cheaper that ticket is likely to be so do not delay once Charley has instructed you to proceed to booking. If you have not replied to him with proof of travel purchase (either by train or by some other means) within 48 hours he will usually offer your place to the next person who is interested in coming.

We recommend that you travel to and from The Burn by train via the LNER website. We suggest you book your tickets for the following trains –

· Tuesday 25 August 2026 -

10:03am departing London King’s Cross for Montrose, Scotland (arriving 16:21)

· Friday 28 August 2026 –

15:33 departing Montrose for London King’s Cross (arriving at 22:01)

https://www.lner.co.uk/buy-tickets/ticket-selection/select-outbound-journey/?ocrs=KGX&onlc=6121&od=London+Kings+Cross&dcrs=MTS&dnlc=9080&dd=Montrose&JourneyType=return&outda=y&ret=y&outy=2026&outm=08&outd=25&outh=09&outmi=30&rety=2026&retm=08&retd=28&reth=14&retmi=00&retda=y&nad=1&nch=0&rc=&rcn=&pc=&pat=&tto=n

Note also that every Member must apply by themselves and for themselves - you cannot send Charley a message naming a group of other Members who wish to travel with you unless of course they are part of your family living in College with you. All Burn bookings are final - if you ask for and accept a place and later choose not to come, and your place cannot be filled, you will be liable for your accommodation cost.

The College is not responsible for any costs you may incur as a result of travel plans having to be changed at the last moment. If you are booking train travel, we recommend that you book directly with the train company LNER rather than with a third-party website. Note that a third-party website may not cover you in the event of train disruption- check the small print. We also recommend that your travel plan, as always, includes adequate travel insurance. Note too that, if your trains are delayed in any way and you receive full reimbursement from the train operator, you will not then be able to apply for a College subsidy of £70 on top of the full reimbursement you have received from the train company.

More information on the fabulous Burn can be found here - https://theburn.co.uk/

<a10:updated>2026-08-12T11:43:58+01:00</a10:updated>

GC Leavers’ Potluck Picnic (22/08/2026, 15:00)

GC Leavers’ Potluck Picnic

Speaker - Professor Susannah Maidment

The Middle Jurassic was a pivotal period in dinosaur evolution, yet it remains one of the least understood chapters in dinosaur history due to the scarcity of fossils from the period. Recent discoveries from Morocco's El Mers III Formation, including North Africa's first stegosaur, Africa's first and the world's oldest discovered ankylosaur, and a newly excavated partial ankylosaur skeleton with an unprecedented body plan, are transforming our understanding of this enigmatic period while revealing one of the best-preserved Middle Jurassic terrestrial ecosystems on Earth.

This talk will explore these remarkable discoveries, the challenges of conducting palaeontological fieldwork in Morocco, and our efforts to build local research capacity and protect the region's fossil heritage.

<a10:updated>2026-08-04T13:41:27+01:00</a10:updated>

Founders' Day- The Proclamation of New Fellows, Michaelmas Term Begins in College (05/10/2026, 17:00)

Today at 5pm in the LH Quad the new College Fellows are proclaimed.
· Document dating from 1067 has never previously been loaned to an exhibition

· William Charter’s addition to Museum’s landmark exhibition aims to help put the tapestry into a broader context of medieval England

One is nearly 230 feet long, the other, just six inches – both of them, unique, hugely valuable, and of immense historical significance in their own right.

And for the first time ever, they will be viewed together at the British Museum later this year.

The William Charter - the oldest document held in the City of London Corporation’s extensive archives and never previously loaned to an exhibition - will be on display at The Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum, which opens in September. Stored at the City of London Corporation-owned The London Archives, the Charter was given to the City of London by King William I in 1067, shortly after the Battle of Hastings, but before he entered the City. Measuring just six inches by one-and-a-half inches, it was written on vellum (parchment) in Old English.

The Charter bears one of the earliest surviving seals from William the Conqueror’s reign and is the earliest known royal or imperial document to guarantee the collective rights of the inhabitants of any town, granting nothing new to Londoners, but confirming the citizens' rights and privileges, which were already in existence. Translated into modern English, the Charter reads:

“William King greets William the Bishop and Geoffrey the Portreeve and all the citizens in London, French and English, in friendly fashion; and I inform you that it is my will that your laws and customs be preserved as they were in King Edward’s day; that every son shall be his father’s heir after his father’s death; and that I will not that any man do wrong to you. God yield you.”

Alongside the Charter will be a small display of items from the Museum’s collections and loans, including an illustrated manuscript from The Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford and the Chew Valley hoard of silver pennies of Harold II and William I.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage, and Libraries Committee, Brendan Barns, said:

“What this remarkable, 969-year-old document lacks in size, it more than makes up for in its historical significance and importance to the history of the City of London Corporation and more widely, to our understanding of life and being ruled in 11th-century England. Taking its place within a small and exclusive list of items, the William Charter’s inclusion in this landmark exhibition will help provide a compelling parallel with the Bayeux Tapestry.”

The Bayeux Tapestry opens at the British Museum on 10 September and is being hailed as its return to England for the first time since it was created nearly 1,000 years ago.

The task will be to see beyond the residue of the later Periklean building programme (Parthenon, Erechtheum, Nike Apteros, Peristyle) and to go in search of the Hekeptompedon and other earlier buildings.

Up to TWELVE (12) Member places are available. These will be recruited competitively in October.

Selected Members are responsible for their own travel to and from Athens and for any visa permissions or insurances they may require in connection with such travel, but the programme in Athens, including 2 nights free shared accommodation and most meals is otherwise covered by the Dean's Office.

This opportunity is made possible by the generosity of the Argyris Family.

<a10:updated>2026-04-01T12:02:51+01:00</a10:updated>

Brunswick Square: Voluntary Gardening Sessions (07/08/2027, 10:00)

Just turn up and do bring your own pair of gloves!

A community-led volunteering initiative invites local residents to participate in monthly gardening sessions at Brunswick Square. The activity combines light physical exercise, time outdoors, and social interaction in a structured yet informal setting. Participants engage in tasks such as planting, tidying, and maintaining shared green space, contributing to both environmental quality and personal wellbeing.

The sessions are accessible (drop-in format), inclusive (no prior experience required), and low-pressure (short, defined time window). The emphasis is on mutual benefit: improving the garden while supporting individual physical health, mental clarity, and social connection. Practical guidance (e.g., bringing gloves) ensures ease of participation, while community contact details provide continuity and engagement beyond a single session.
