Myanmar Earthquake 2025 - Mandalay City Buildings Mapping in collaboration with Myanmar’s OpenStreetMap team by our GC Burmese Community and Coding Collective
On March 28, 2025, a devastating shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter near Mandalay struck central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction, especially along the geological fault line running in a north-south direction across the country. Large areas, including major cities such as Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw, were severely affected. This disaster strikes amid an already dire situation for the people of Myanmar, who have been enduring the ongoing civil war since 2021.
In response to this tragedy, myOSM – Myanmar’s OpenStreetMap Community has launched a mapping initiative to support humanitarian efforts and is calling for help to map affected regions. GC Burmese community and Coding collective are coming together to join hands with myOSM in this initiative. Our goal is to provide essential mapping data to local responders, helping them plan and coordinate both immediate emergency relief and long-term reconstruction efforts. We need your help to digitize building footprints in Mandalay City using satellite imagery - https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/18571
College members, yogi (osm.org/user/yogi_ks) and sri(osm.org/user/srividya_c), who are long time contributors to OSM will be helping interested members in simple steps for first five minutes during the hands-on session to show how to map on OSM in collaboration with myOSM using the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's tasking manager platform. Please come with your laptop and join us on this Saturday April 5, 6PM at London House Small Common Room.
