For millions, the first few notes of Joe Hisaishi's melodies are enough to transport you somewhere else. This November, Hisaishi himself takes to the podium at the Hall to lead the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a triple UK premiere of concert works.
Two harps meet a string orchestra in his Adagio, and his Concerto for Orchestra sets colour, rhythm and imagination loose across the full orchestra. Alongside them comes David Lang's mountain, a striking contemporary voice in a programme that moves between intimacy and grandeur.
Rooted in minimalism and Romanticism, this is Hisaishi beyond the screen: an endlessly inventive creator of music for the concert hall, and a chance to hear a side of him that cinema audiences rarely get to experience.
