Science Week Event: Science Communication and Outreach - Poster competition
WGH LCR
Welcome to Goodenough College's first Science Communication and Outreach event that will take place on Saturday, 9th March 2024 in the Large Common Room of William Goodenough House!
This competition is amicable and aims to:
- Provide tools and advice on communicating science and designing abstracts and posters, with the help of College Fellow Professor George Ellison, from Leeds University;
- Allow you to practice designing and completing a poster in an efficient way on an accessible tool, Powerpoint;
- Encourage us to share and discover the science done by our very own students, and take pride in our community!
The day will go as follows:
11:00-12:15 AM - Presentation by Prof. George Ellison, Fellow of the College, about designing powerful abstracts and scientific posters
12:15-13:00 - Lunch break
13:00-14:30 PM - Work on your own poster on Powerpoint (please bring your own laptop to do so)
14:30 - 15:00 PM - Printing of the posters over A4 sheets, hanging them and preparing the room
15:00 - 16:00 PM - Poster exhibition - Everyone invited to attend the session and vote for their favourite poster!
16:00 - 16:30 PM - Count the votes and name the winners (Grand Prize for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places!)
All in all, we want to be done in time for the England - Ireland rugby game at 16.45 PM ;)
Professor George TH Ellison is a Professor of Data Science and Director of the UCLan Policy Forum and Center for Data Innovation at the University of Central Lancashire. Additionally, he is currently a visiting Professor of Epidemiology at Leeds Medical School. He has tremendous experience in teaching how to present data, prepare powerful abstracts and present interesting posters. He will be conducting a talk to all participants about the design of scientific posters using the simplest of tools: Powerpoint. Please bring your own computer!
Grand prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places: A drink reception and visit of the Royal Society with its Executive Director, Dame Julie Maxton (the first woman in 350 years to hold this post!)
Rules of the Poster Competition
This challenge is for any MEMBER of the College wanting to share ...
- A project you HAVE DONE recently and for which you have results;
- ANTICIPATED results of an ongoing project;
- Anticipated APPLICATIONS of a recent or ongoing project.
YOU MUST:
1. Bring a laptop to work on your poster
2. Use Powerpoint to design the poster
3. Allow us to print and display the poster on a screen during the afternoon exhibit
4. Invite your friends to come and see the exhibition at 15:00 PM!
5. Present REAL data or real ideas (this is not a made-up or joke event, although these can also be quite fun!)
6. Present you OWN project or a project you are a part of.
7. Prepare a poster with a white background (so it is easy to print).
YOU MAY NOT:
8. Present a poster that you have already presented elsewhere (the project, data, etc. can be re-used, but we ask that you work on a new poster on Powerpoint to make it fair and not just bring your old poster!)
9. Invent data
10. Present a project that you have not worked on
11. Print your own poster - to be fair, we will print everyone's posters on A4 paper and tape them together. The goal is not for it to be pretty, but efficient and cheap.
12. Present MORE than one poster.
YOU MAY:
13. Present a project that is ongoing, or just started; a poster can present a protocol, a literature review...
14. Present a finished project from many years ago (although more recent data is always more interesting)
15. Participate, even if you are not in the Medical and Natural Sciences Faculty; however please present projects that have some kind of science attached to them, please :)
Please fill out this form as early as possible, and before March 8th, 17:00 PM.
PS. The official name of the event is "Goodenough College Science Communication and Outreach event" as part of Science Week 2024. You may absolutely use this experience of presenting a scientific poster in an academic setting on your CV! We will also be handing out participation certificates to every attendee who registers prior to the event. This is a GREAT opportunity to add a good experience to your CV easily!
