Port Talk: Hidayah - Gender, Sexuality and Islam

The LGBTQIA+ Conference at Goodenough College welcomes our opening keynote, Hidayah.

Osman is the outreach volunteer for Hidayah, a charity which provides support and welfare for LGBTQI+ Muslims and education around the Queer Muslim community to counter discrimination, prejudice and injustice.
 

Hidayah was founded in hopes of providing more exposure to LGBTQI+ Muslims something seemingly scarce for the double, and sometimes triple, minority individuals within society.

 So far, Hidayah, has provided support to hundreds of people and has also provided exposure for the Queer Muslim community by being on debates about Faith and Sexuality, recently going on the radios stations such as BBC, Gaydio, Shout Out Radio and being of panels organised by universities and external parties as well as publishing articles with established magazines such as Gay Times magazine, Cosmopolitan, DIVA magazine. We have co-produced a conference in Birmingham which gained 200 attendees from all communities, and have spoken to Malaysian government officials about treating LGBTQI+ Muslims in their nation state, with acceptance. We have launched photo campaigns, made documentaries and have attended events across the country to ensure that we are heard and seen. We have been involved in the ongoing debate on RSE education in Parkfield Primary school in Birmingham.

 For Hidayah, this is a massive step not only for the wider LGBTQI+ community but also for the Queer Muslims that exist within the community as not only does this exposure tell wider society 'hey, we exist too!' It tells vulnerable young people that it's okay to be who they are and that their feeling aren't impure, wrong or the 'influence' of western society. For us, this empowerment of Queer Muslims will not only help wider society and the Muslim community to move and progress onwards but it will help the LGBTQI+ community to progress and become even stronger than it is now"
