The Academic Committee is the main body which governs the intellectual life at the College. It is responsible for directing, developing, overseeing and encouraging members’ participation in creating and stimulating a vibrant intellectual reality which extends beyond Mecklenburgh Square . The Academic Committee is responsible for the organisation and facilitation of events, including conferences, Port Talks and other types of talks and lectures, debates, panels, study trips, thematic nights, cultural events and more. The organisation of conferences, whether as an independent College initiative or in collaboration with other entities, forms a major aspect in the Committee’s work. To that end, the Committee designates conference steering groups, which run conferences from beginning to end. The Academic Committee also liaises with other academic, professional, social and political entities, in order to enrich College Members by bringing in outside speakers and guests, as well as by promoting the participation and networking of College Members with these entities in their actions outside Goodenough College. The Committee is made-up of 18 to 22 members, including staff, Governors, Fellows and Members. Membership is inclusive and is based on academic and cultural diversity, as well as individual commitment. The Committee meets 4 times a year and is headed by a Chair from the College’s Board of Governors. Other elected positions include a Secretary, Internal Relations Officer, External Relations Officer and IT Officer, who are elected for a term of one year or less.
